The Swedish School Society, more commonly known as The Nordic School, serves the extended Nordic community of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The school provides a nurturing, supportive environment based on Nordic pedagogical principles, for children ages 1-6 years, in the preschool program, and children ages 5-15 years, in the after-school program.
Teachers at the Nordic School work in a dynamic school environment based on Nordic principles. They are able to enjoy creative, educational and fun surroundings that include excellent facilities with a large, shaded playground, swimming pool, tennis court, and spacious fanned and air-conditioned rooms. Teachers work together to plan and implement a Nordic pedagogy and curriculum that focuses on play-based learning, language development and cultural inclusion. Additionally, teachers are offered unique opportunities for professional and personal development, including the opportunity to work and live in Tanzania, a country renowned for its hospitality, diversity, and wildlife.
Job Responsibilities for Preschool teachers:
Preschool teachers work either in the “Kidogo” class, which serves the youngest children, ages 1 to 3 years or the “Kubwa” class, which serves our older children, ages 3 to 6 years. Teachers may also work in both classes. Teachers collaborate with their colleagues to develop theme plans and weekly plans that are developmentally appropriate and meet the diverse needs of the group. Teachers develop meaningful relationships with students and their families and work to maintain a positive environment that supports all students.
Job Responsibilities for After school teachers:
After School teachers work with school-age children ages 5 to 15 years old in an after school enrichment program. Teachers collaborate with their colleagues to develop theme plans and weekly plans that are developmentally appropriate and meet the diverse needs of the group. Teachers develop meaningful relationships with students and their families and work to maintain a positive environment that supports all students.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Professional with genuine interest in children, their development and well-being
- Pedagogical Degree or equivalent professional experience working with children
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and collaboration skills
- The ability to contribute to pedagogical development and capacity building at the school
- Applicants must have written and verbal fluency in English and at least one of the following languages: Swedish, Norwegian or Danish
